REFERENCES FOR THE KILLING OF JANABE MOHSIN IBNE ALI (AS) - PART I V

41. Al-Maqdisi al-Ardabili has said, “... `Omer in person hit her on her stomach, and his slave whipped her on her shoulder. That was the reason for her miscarriage.”42
 
42. In a letter from `Omer to Mu`awiyah, the first admits the following: “And her pain of childbirth intensified. I entered the house, so she miscarried a son whom Ali called Muhassan.”43
 
43. Al-Saduq has transmitted from some mentors the following explanation of the Prophet ‘s statement to Ali (A.S.) wherein he said, “There is a treasure for you in Paradise”: “This treasure is his son al-Muhassan, the one whom Fatima (A.S.) miscarried when she was squeezed between both doors.”44

25. Ibn Aba Jumhar has said, “... and how she wa squeezed by the door till she miscarried her fetus.” He also said, “As regarding the incident of the burning, the beating, and the miscarriage of the fetus, some of it is narrated from you..., etc.”26
 
26. Al-Karki, the researcher, has said the following protesting against them, “... And how he gathered firewood at the door, and how he caused Fatima (A.S.) to miscarry Muhassan...”27

12. Ibn Sa`d al-Jaza’iri has said, “... And they beat Fatima (A.S.), so she miscarried a fetus.”13
13. Al-Fattani al-`amili has said, “... According to narratives told by Ahl al-Bayt (A.S.), `Omer pushed the door in order to enter by force, and Fatima (A.S.) was behind the door. The door hit her stomach, so she miscarried her fetus named al-Muhassan.”14

1. It has already been stated that al-Maqdisi attributes the miscarriage of al-Muhassan to the Shi`as who state that it was because `Omer beat al-Zahra’ (A.S.).
2. He has said, “And among them is what is narrated by al-Balathiri, whose statement is famous among the Shi`a, saying that `Omer squeezed Fatima (A.S.) behind the door till she miscarried Muhassan despite everyone’s knowledge of her father’s statement: ‘She is part of me; whoever hurts her hurts me.’”1
3. `Imad ad-Din al-Tabari (one of the 7th century scholars) has said the following: “And they have said that Fatima (A.S.) miscarried Muhassan because `Omer beat her on her stomach.”2

Abu Bakr Abdullah Ibn Muhammad Ibn Uthman Abasi Kufi, famous as Ibn Abi Shaybah (exp. 235 A.H.) in his book ‘AlMusannaf’, vol. 7, p. 432, Tr. No. 37045, first edition, Beirut (circa1409 A.H.), narrates a tradition on the, authority of Aslam Certainly, after the demise of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w).

When they were extracting allegiance for Abu Bakr, Ali (a.s) and Zubair were with Fatemah (a.s), the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w), consulting her and taking her view on the issue. The moment Umar heard of this, immediately he left for the house of Fatemah (s.a) and said:

“O daughter of Allah (s.w.t)’s Messenger (s.a.w.w)! By Allah (s.w.t)! None is dearer to me than your father and none after him is more important for me than you. But by Allah (s.w.t)! This love and affection will not stop me from ordering to set ablaze your house due to these persons who have gathered in it.”

As soon as Umar left, Fatemah (s.a) came to Ali (a.s) and Zubair and said,

“Do you know what Umar said to me? He swore by Allah (s.w.t) that if you don’t come out of the house, he will set my house on fire and by Allah (s.w.t), he will certainly do it.”

Here is a presentation which outlines the event of the burning of the door of the house of Hazrat Zahra (sa) and the references for the same from the books of the Ahle Sunnat.

Narration from Imam Askari (as) regarding the persecutions upon Hazrat Zahra (sa)

“… and the Qur’an was distorted, and the house where revelation used to descend was burnt… and the face of the Lady of Virtue was slapped…”

Sayyid Ibn Tawas, in his work titled Zawa’id al-Fawa’id, citing Kitab al-Mukhtasar by Shaikh Hasan ibn Sulayman, a copy handwritten by Ali ibn Muzahir al-Wasiti, through a continuous chain of isnad that ends with Muhammed ibn al-`Ala’ al-Hamadani al-Wasiti. Then he cites it from Kitab al-Mukhtasar at the conclusion of which he says that he copied it from an edition handwritten by Muhammed ibn Ali ibn Tay. In it, it is stated that Ibn Abul-`Ala’ al-Hamadani and Yahya ibn Muhammed ibn Haweej disputed with each other regarding `Omer ibn al-Khattab, so they sought the arbitration of Ahmed ibn Ishaq al-Qummi, a friend of Imam al-Hasan al-`Askari (A.S.).

Narration from Imam Jawad (as) regarding the persecutions upon Hazrat Zahra (sa)

He said, `About what was done to my mother Fatima (A.S.)…, by Allah…, etc.’ Then he, peace be upon him, stated how those who did so would be punished.”

Narration from Imam Reza (as) regarding Hazrat Zahra (sa)

He cited the supplication which contains the following: “… and they both ridiculed Your Messenger and killed the son of Your Prophet (A.S.)…, etc.”

The great `allama and the ascetic worshipper, Sayyid Ibn Tawoos, may Allah have mercy on him, has transmitted a supplication by our master Imam al-Rida (A.S.) to be recited during sajdat al-shukr (prostration of thanksgiving) which he narrates through the isnad to Sa`d ibn `Abdullah in a book detailing the rewards of supplication. He cites Aba Ja`fer quoting Muhammed (A.S.) ibn Isma`al ibn Bazee` quoting Imam al-Rida (A.S.) and also Bakar ibn Salih from Sulayman ibn Ja`fer from al-Rida (A.S.).

The Holy Prophet (sawa) said, “The door of Fatima (A.S.) is my door, her house is mine; so, whoever violates its sanctity violates the sanctity of Allah’s barrier.”

`Allama al-Majlisi, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him, has transmitted from Kitab al-Taraf by the great `allama Sayyid Ibn Tawas, from Kitab al-Wasiyya by Shaikh `asa ibn al-Mustafad al-Darar from Masa ibn Ja`fer from his father saying that when the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) was about to leave this world for the next, he said, “O men of the Ansar! Parting is opportune… The door of Fatima (A.S.) is my door, her house is mine; so, whoever violates its sanctity violates the sanctity of Allah’s barrier.” `asa goes on to say that the father of al-Hasan (A.S.) wept for a long time. He discontinued his narrative then said, “By Allah! Allah’s barrier was violated! By Allah! Allah’s barrier was violated! By Allah! Allah’s barrier was violated! O nation blessed by Allah!”[1]

When the Prophet (A.S.) was taken for the night journey, it was said to him that Allah would test him in three instances. So the angel kept counting them till he said, “As for your daughter Fatima (A.S.), she will be oppressed and deprived and her right will be confiscated, the inheritance which you will leave her. And she will be hit while she is pregnant; insults and humiliation will affect her, then she will miscarry what is in her womb and be beaten, and she will die from such beating… The first to raise a complaint against his killer (on the Day of Judgment) will be Mohsin son of Ali (A.S.), then Qunfuz and his fellow (Abu Bakr) will be brought…”

Narrations from Imam Baqir (as) or Imam Sadiq (as) regarding Hazrat Fatema (sa) - II

Then `Omer set out with a torch in his hand and wanted to burn Ali (A.S.), Fatima (A.S.), al-Hasan (A.S.) and al-Husain (A.S.).

Allama al-`Ayyashi, may Allah have mercy on him, has cited one of these Imams (A.S.) narrating a lengthy tradition at the end of which he (A.S.) said,
Abu Bakr sent him a message to go there to swear the oath of allegiance to him. Ali (A.S.) said, “I shall not come out till I finish compiling the Qur’an.” He sent for him again. He said, “I shall not come out till I am through.” Abu Bakr sent for him a third time a cousin of his called Qunfuz Fatima (A.S.) daughter of the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) went out to act as a barrier between the men and Ali (A.S.). Qunfath hit her, returning without Ali (A.S.). It was feared that he would amass a group of opponents. Abu Bakr ordered firewood to be brought and placed around Ali’s house. Then `Umar set out with a torch in his hand and wanted to burn Ali (A.S.), Fatima (A.S.), al-Hasan (A.S.) and al-Husain (A.S.). When Ali (A.S.) saw all of that, he was forced to come out to swear fealty against his wish.[1]

Narrations from Imam Baqir (as) regarding Hazrat Fatema (sa)

“Muhammed ibn Jarar ibn Rustam al-Tabari stated that Ali (A.S.) lagged behind when Abu Bakr received the people’s oath of allegiance, so they went to his house and intended to set it to fire.”

Ibrahim ibn Ahmed al-Tabari, relying on Ali ibn `Umar ibn Hasan ibn Ali al-Siyari who cites Muhammed ibn Zakariyya al-Ghulabi citing Ja`fer ibn Muhammed ibn `Imarah citing his father citing Jabir al-Ju`fi citing Aba Ja`fer Muhammed ibn Ali (A.S.) ibn al-Husain (A.S.) citing his father citing his grandfather citing Muhammed ibn `Ammar ibn Yasir in a tradition saying the following:
… She was pregnant with al-Hasan (A.S.). Having given birth to him, she conceived forty days thereafter with al-Husain (A.S.), then was blessed with Zainab and Umm Kulthum. Then she was big with al-Muhassan. When the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) passed away, and when the folks did what they did on that day when they forcefully entered her house and took her cousin, the Commander of the Faithful (A.S.), out by force and after the harm dealt her by that man (`Omer), she miscarried her son. That was the original cause of her sickness then consequently her death, peace and blessings of Allah be upon her.[1]

“Ali (A.S.) turned to the grave (of the Messenger of Allah [a]) and said, “O Brother! The people deem me weak, and they almost killed me.”

Muhammed ibn Jarar ibn Rustam al-Tabari has recorded the following: “We have been informed by Makhal ibn Ibrahim al-Nahdi who says that Matar ibn Arqam has said that Aba Hamzah al-Thumali has said that Ali (A.S.) ibn al-Husain (A.S.) has said the following: When he (A.S.) passed away, and when Abu Bakr received the oath of allegiacne, Ali (A.S.) lagged behind, so `Omer said to Abu Bakr, “Are you not going to send someone to this lagging man to come and swear the oath of allegiance to you?” He (Abu Bakr) said, ‘O Qunfath! Go to Ali and tell him that the successor of the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) tells you to come and swear the oath of allegiacne.”

Narrations from Imam Hasan Mujtaba (as) regarding his mother Hazrat Zahra (sa)

“You are the one who hit Fatima (A.S.) daughter of the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) and caused her to bleed and she miscarried, thus humiliating the Messenger of Allah (A.S.), disobeying his order and violating his sanctity since the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) had said to her, `O Fatima! You are the Head of all the women of Paradise.’

It is narrated from al-Sha`bi, Abi Mikhnaf, Yazid ibn Habib al-Misri the tradition of Imam al-Hasan al-Mujtaba (A.S.) arguing with `Amr ibn al-`as, al-Walid ibn `Uqbah, `Amr ibn `Othman and `Utbah ibn Aba Sufyan in the presence of Mu`awiyah, and it is quite a lengthy tradition. In it, the Imam (A.S.) says to al-Mugharah ibn Shu`bah, “You are the one who hit Fatima (A.S.) daughter of the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) and caused her to bleed and she miscarried, thus humiliating the Messenger of Allah (A.S.), disobeying his order and violating his sanctity since the Messenger of Allah (A.S.) had said to her, `O Fatima! You are the Head of all the women of Paradise.’”[1]

Narrations from Imam Ali (as) about the persecution of Hazrat Fatema (sa)

Imam Ali (as) said to Umar, “It is the fire that you ignited at the door of my house in order to burn me and to burn Fatima (A.S.), daughter of the Messenger of Allah (A.S.), and burn my sons, al-Hasan (A.S.) and al-Husain (A.S.) and also burn my daughters Zainab and Umm Kulthum…, etc.”

SALIM ibn Qais has narrated saying that `Umar ibn al-Khattab once fined all his governors half of their salaries, exempting Qunfuz al-`Adawi from such a fine, and he was one of such governors. He even returned to him what he had taken away from him, the sum of twenty thousand dirhams. Nor did he deduct the tilth, nor half the tilth. Aban said that SALIM has said, “I met Ali (A.S.) and asked him about what he thought regarding what `Umar had done. He said, `Do you know why he (`Umar) exempted Qunfuz and did not fine him or deduct anything from his salary?’ I said, `No.’ He said, `Because he is the one who hit Fatima, peace and blessings of Allah be upon her, with the whip when she came to act as a barrier between me and them. So she died, peace and blessings of Allah be upon her, and there was still a mark on her wrist like a bracelet.’”[1]

As for my daughter Fatima (A.S.), she is the Head of the Women of Mankind… When I saw her, I remembered what she will have to endure after me. It is as if humiliation entered inside her house, violating her privacy, confiscating her rights, depriving her of her inheritance, breaking her side, causing her to miscarry as she will call our: `O Muhammed!’ but there will be none to respond to her. She will seek help, but she will not be helped. She will remain after me grieved, depressed, weeping… Then she will see herself humiliated after being, during her father’s lifetime, honored and dignified… She will be the first to rejoin me from among my Ahl al-Bayt. She will come to me sad, depressed, usurped, murdered. It will then be said by the Messenger of Allah (A.S.), `O Lord! Condemn whoever condemned her! Punish whoever confiscated what belonged to her! Humiliate whoever humiliated her! And keep in Your Fire whoever hit her on her side till she miscarried her son!’

ÙˆَØ¥ِØ°َا الْÙ…َÙˆْØ¡ُودَØ©ُ سُئِÙ„َتْ (8) بِØ£َÙŠِّ Ø°َÙ†ْبٍ Ù‚ُتِÙ„َتْ (9)

“And when the female infant buried alive is asked. For what sin she was killed,” (Surah Takwir 81, verse 8 and 9)

Then the Imam said  : O Mufaddal, by Allah, ‘Maowdato” means Mohsin and surely he is from us and not others …..

Shi'a sources say that two days after Muhammad's death, Umar al-Khattab led a party of armed men to Ali's house. They called for the men of the house to come out and swear allegiance to Abu Bakr, and also threatened to burn the house down. No one came out, so the armed men pushed their way into the house. Fatima, who was pregnant at the time, was standing behind the door. Umar al Khattab pushed Fatima behind the burning door. He broke her ribs and wrist. Later, she miscarried a boy child, who was called Al Muhsin or Mushabbar.

The burial of Janabe’ Zahra and the lamentation of Ali (a.s.)

Hazrat Ali (a.s) remained sorrowful and at the same time he was secretly taking help from Asma binte’ Umays till the last moments of the life of Janabe’ Zahra (s.a). In her will, Janabe’ Zahra expressed her desire that he (a.s) should give ablutions to her dead body, bury her in the darkness of the night and erase all signs of her grave. She also insisted that neither these two nor their friends should be allowed to participate in her funeral and the funeral prayers.

The effects of this tyranny stayed on the holy body of Janabe’ Zahra (a.s.). After this, she remained sad and became sick, till she was confined to the bed.

The body started becoming weak and thin and nothing remained till she was reduced to a shadow of herself. She became severely sick. She did not permit those who had troubled her to visit her. Nobody saw her smile towards the end of her life.

When her sickness intensified Umar told Abu Bakr, “I wish to visit Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.). We have offended her.” They sought permission to meet her, but she did not grant them permission. They kept on insisting. Then, one day they met Hazrat Ali (a.s.) and said, “You know what has transpired between us and Janabe’ Zahra. If you find it appropriate, then obtain us permission to meet her so that we can apologise for our crimes.

Janabe Zahra (sa) leaves the house

At this time, Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.) left her house in the condition that she had worn the headdress of the Prophet (s.a.w.). Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Hussain (a.s.) were clutching at her fingers and tears were streaming down her face. She was separating the people while accompanied by the women of Bani Hashim who were also weeping. She cried out, “O Abu Bakr, how soon did you turn your face away from the Ahle’ Bayt (a.s.) of the Prophet (s.a.w.)? By Allah, I will not speak to Umar for what remains of my life.[1] O Abu Bakr! I share no relationship with you of any kind and of any manner. Do you wish make my children, orphans and me, a widow?

People forcibly dragged Hazrat Ali (a.s.) from his House - Part 2


The people took Hazrat Ali (a.s.) to Abu Bakr and made him sit before him.[1] At that moment Umar stood behind him holding a sword to his neck. Khalid ibne Waleed, Abu Obaydah bin Jarrah, Saalem Maula Abu Huzayfah, Ma’az bin Jabal Mughayrah bin Shoaybah, Aseed ibne Saeed and some other companions were gathered there with their arms.

Hazrat Ali (a.s.) said, How soon have you attacked the house of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). O Abu Bakr! On the basis of which right, on the basis of which inheritance or which merit are you seeking allegiance from the people. Did you not, on the order of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.), give bay’at to me and acknowledge my wilayat and leadership?[2] At this, Umar sat on Hazrat Ali’s (a.s.) thigh and held him tight with both hands.[3] He shook Hazrat Ali (a.s.) and said, “Leave all this aside and just do bay’at. ” Hazrat Ali (a.s.) challenged him saying, “and if I do not agree to give bay’at? ” They said, “We will kill you with utmost disgrace and humiliation.” Some narrations attribute this statement to Abu Bakr and others to Umar – “We swear by La ilaha illallah, we will sever your head.”

The people forcibly dragged Hazrat Ali (a.s.) from his house.[1] Umar was especially harsh on Hazrat Ali (a.s.)[2] and was pulling him mercilessly.[3] The rest of the people followed this procession. Hazrat Ali (a.s.), while talking about this incident says, “I was dragged by the people for bay’at just as a camel is dragged.[4] The swords of the people were drawn and their spears were shining in readiness.” His condition was such that he was in a state of extreme sadness and often was filled with fury. But with great patience he overcame his anger.[5] He was also extremely weary and tired.[6]

The Attack on the house of Janabe Zahra (sa) Part 2

The burning of the door and the death of Janabe’ Mohsin 

Umar ordered the group to gather the wood and he, himself came forward with the fire.[1] He was screaming, “Burn the house! Burn the house along with its people![2]

Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.) raised her voice and wailed, “O father! O Prophet of Allah! After your departure, Ibne Khattab (Umar) and Ibne Quhafah (Abu Bakr) troubled us a lot and caused us distress to no end.”

When the people heard the wailing of Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.), they too began weeping and, in that condition, left that place. Now just Umar and a few people remained there.[3] Umar asked for the fire and set the door alight.[4] The wood gathered at the door caught fire.[5] The entire house was filled with smoke.[6] Qunfuz put his hand inside to open the door.[7]

The Attack on the house of Janabe Zahra (sa) Part 1

The crowd left towards the house of Hazrat Ali (a.s.). The harbored the intention of burning down the house along with the inhabitants.[1] Ibn Abi Ka’ab reports that we heard the neighing of horses, the clatter of bridles and the clanging of spears. We left our houses. The crowd had already gathered at the house of Hazrat Ali (a.s.).[2] Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.) was standing behind the door. There was a bandage on her head. It was obvious that she had been weakened by the relentless grief for her father[3] – the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). When she saw the approaching crowd, she shut the door to her house. She was confident that these people would not enter the house without her permission.[4]

The people reached the door and knocked on it with great force.[5] They began pushing and pulling at the door violently. They kept on hurling abuses at the inhabitants of the house[6] and insisting that they do the bay’at of Abu Bakr.[7] Umar shouted, “O son of Abu Talib, open the door![8] I swear by Allah that if you do not open the door, I will burn it down.[9] I swear by the One in whose Hands is my life, come out and do bay’at or else I will set this house on fire. O Ali, come out and accept the verdict of the people, or else we will wage war with you.[10]

Preparation of the attack on the house of J. Zahra (sa) - Part 3

Umar was incensed by the reply of Janabe Zahra (s.a.) and said, “Why should these women interfere in our work?” He ordered the people present there to collect firewood.[1]

As per another report, on hearing the reply of Janabe’ Zahra (a.s.), Umar became extremely restless. He said to Khalid ibne Waleed and Qunfuz, “Gather wood and fire.”[2] Abu Bakr told Umar to call the most hardhearted and insensitive person that he could find.[3] Go to their house and draw them out. If they do not agree, then wage war with them.[4]

Umar said to Abu Bakr, “What stops you from summoning him (Hazrat Ali (a.s.)) and forcing him to submit to your caliphate?[1] If you are unable to do so, I am most certainly capable of it.” Then he stepped out in a fit of rage and called his tribesmen and his family members, “Answer the call of the caliph of the Prophet (s.a.w.)!” At this call, the people began gathering in the Masjid of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). At that moment, Umar said to Abu Bakr, “I have arranged riders and foot soldiers for you”[2] Abu Bakr, seeing this spectacle said, “Now should we send somebody to his house?”

Preparation of the attack on the house of J. Zahra (sa) - Part 1


When Abu Bakr was informed that few of those who had not given bay’at to him were sitting along with Ameerul Mo’meneen Hazrat Ali (a.s.), he sent Umar with a large group to the house of Hazrat Ali (a.s.)[1]. Umar asked for the people to come out, but they refused. Umar ordered for some wood to be brought and said, “By the One in whose Hands is my life! If you do not come out, I will burn the house down along with its inhabitants.” The people told him, “O Abu Hafas, Fatemah (s.a.) is there in the house.” He replied, “So what!”[2]

Umar sought permission to enter the house of Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.), but it was not granted to him. At this, Umar created a huge uproar and began threatening the people.[3]

Invitation towards helping the truth

Janabe’ Salman reports that during the night, Hazrat Ali (a.s.), accompanied by Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.) and his sons, Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Hussain (a.s.) visited the houses of the companions of the Holy Prophet. He asked them by the right of Allah (s.w.t.) to help and support him. But besides us four, nobody even gave him a reply. We shaved our heads and prepared ourselves for his help. When Hazrat Ali (a.s.) saw that people were not ready to support him and that instead, all of them were in support of Abu Bakr, he confined himself to his house.[1]

Abu Bakr is calling you.

Abu Bakr then asked Qunfuz to go and tell Hazrat Ali (a.s.) that Abu Bakr is calling you.

Hazrat Ali (a.s.) on hearing the message of Qunfuz returned him saying that, “I am busy in the work which my friend, my brother entrusted me with. You go back to Abu Bakr and to the one who has collected oppression around him.”[1]

"Ameerul Mo’meneen has summoned you.”

 Abu Bakr then called for Qunfuz and said, “Go to Ali (a.s.) and tell him that the Ameerul Mo’meneen has summoned you.”

Qunfuz narrated this to Ali (a.s.) who remarked, By Allah (s.w.t.), he has lied. Go to Abu Bakr and tell him that he is associating himself with a title that does not belong to him. He is well aware that the Ameerul Mo’meneen is a person other than himself.”

“The caliph of the Muslims is calling you.”

 
Another report narrates the incident as follows – Qunfuz said to Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.) that I have been sent by Abu Bakr ibne Qahaf, the caliph of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). You inform Ali (a.s.) that the leader of the Muslims has summoned him. At this Ali (a.s.) replied, “When you addressed the Ansar in Saqifah Bani Sa’adah, at that time, you were not even staking your claim to the title. Instead you were inviting your friends Umar and Abu Obaydah for it. And today, you yourself are claiming ownership to it.” Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.) informed Qunfuz about this reply. He returned to Abu Bakr and was sent back by Umar to Hazrat Ali (a.s.) with the message, “The caliph of the Muslims is calling you.”

Qunfuz went again to Hazrat Ali (a.s.) and repeated the message, at which, Ali (a.s.) remarked, “The one who is made caliph is inferior to the one who appoints the caliph. The one who is made caliph cannot rule over the one who appoints the caliph. Neither will his orders be heard, nor will he be obeyed.[1]

"The caliph of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) has summoned you."
Umar came to Abu Bakr and said, “Will you not seek the oath of allegiance from those who have refused to do so?[1] All the people have done your bay’at, save one person and his family. And these are just a few individuals.[2]

As per the narration of Janabe’ Salman, Umar said, “Send a person to Hazrat Ali (a.s.) for his bay’at. We will not enjoy any position if he (a.s.) does not pay allegiance to you even though everyone else may do so.[3]

As per another tradition, “O chief! You have nothing for yourself till the time Ali (a.s.) does not swear allegiance to you. Send a person to Hazrat Ali (a.s.) so that he may seek his bay’at in your favor.” Consequently Abu Bakr dispatched Qunfuz saying to him, “You go to Ali (a.s.) and say to him that the caliph of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) has summoned you.

The Opressions begin

The supporters of Abu Bakr had reached a sizeable number. Abu Bakr and Umar maintained their pressure on people to swear their allegiance. At that time, ‘Umme’ Mustah Ibne Asasi’ recited these verses at the grave of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.):

“We have been deprived of your grace in the same manner as the earth is deprived of rain. Your ummat has silently betrayed you. You come and give witness to all that is happening.”

It is said that Zubayr and Miqdad would regularly present themselves before Hazrat Ali (a.s.), would consult him and then go back to the people. At that Umar came to the house of Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.) and spoke with her, “If these people continue to visit you, I will order your house to be burnt down.”[1] In another narration, it is reported that Umar said, “I will destroy this house.”[2]

Hazrat Ali (a.s.) gathered the Holy Quran

After the demise of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.), as per his instructions, Hazrat Ali (a.s.) busied himself in collecting the Quran. From the third day itself[1] – i.e., Wednesday, he (a.s.) began this activity.


[1] As is mentioned in the narrations of Farikheen, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w) was buried on the night of Wednesday. Therefore there is not doubt that the work of collection of the Holy Quran began on Wednesday. This was when it began, but it is not clear how many days it took to complete this task. Then the narration of Furaate’ Kufi from Imam Mohammed Baqer (as), which has been recorded by Ibne’ Nadeem in his book Fehrist makes it clear that Ameerul Mo’meneen (as) took 3 days to compile the Quran. Please refer Tafseer’e Furaate’ Kufi, page 398/399; Behaarul Anwaar, volume 23 page 249; Al Fehrist, page 30. However in some traditions from Imam Mohammed Baqer (as), which he narrates from his forefathers (as), that after the seventh day of the martyrdom of the Holy Prophet (saw), Hazrat Ali (as) delivered a sermon  - Khubae’ Wasilah. In some copies it is nine days, this sermon was delivered after Hazrat Ali (as)  completed the compilation of the Quran. Al Kaafi, volume 8 page 17; At Tawheed, page 73; Amali Sudooq, page 320; Amali Shaykh Tusi, volume 1 page 263; Behaarul Anwaar, volume 4 page 122 and volume 77 page 382.

Hazrat Ali (a.s.) refused to pay allegiance to Abu Bakr - Part 2

Abu Obaydah came to Hazrat Ali (a.s.) and said, “O the son of my uncle! We do not deny your nearness, your precedence in Islam, your knowledge and your help. It is only that you are lesser in age (at that time, Hazrat Ali (a.s.) was 33 years old). Abu Bakr is elder to you and is more experienced.[1] He will be able to bear this burden more efficiently  (than you). Whatever had to happen has happened. Now you accept and submit before him. If Allah (s.w.t.) grants you a long life, we will hand over this caliphate to you. No person will oppose this move at that time. You will be more deserving and worthy for it then. (Do not create a commotion on this issue. You are aware of the opinion of the Arabs and the non Arabs about yourself.)”

Hazrat Ali (a.s.) refused to pay allegiance to Abu Bakr - Part 1

All the members of Bani Hashim who were present there were rounded up and taken to Abu Bakr. They were told, pay your allegiance to Abu Bakr as others have done. And by Allah, if you don’t, we will use our swords against you. In such a helpless situation, Bani Hashim offered their allegiance to Abu Bakr.[1]

However, Hazrat Ali (a.s.) refused to pay allegiance to Abu Bakr and countered, “I am more worthy of this position than you. You all should swear allegiance to me. You have sought allegiance from the Ansar on the basis of your proximity to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) and now you wish to snatch this right from us, Ahle’ Bayt (a.s.)? Did you not offer this argument that on account of your closeness to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) you are more eligible for the caliphate than them? Surely it is on this account that they handed over this position to you.

what was the conduct of the ummat towards Ahle’ Bayt (a.s.)?

When Hazrat Ali (a.s.) completed the burial of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.), he busied himself in those works, which the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) had entrusted him with. He remained within the confines of his house.[1] Few members of Bani Hashim, some Ansar[2] and some Mohajirs presented themselves before him. Amongst these were Abbas[3], Zubayr[4], Miqdad[5], Talha[6], Sa’ad ibn Abi Waqqas[7] and No’man.

These people were displeased with the bay’at (allegiance) to Abu Bakr and wished to free themselves from it.[8] They desired to express their disapproval of the same[9] and wanted to pledge their support to Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.).[10]

What did Allah (s.a.w.) and the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) guide us to…?


The Holy Quran clearly states that the reward for the toils and the efforts of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) is love and affection for his Ahle’ Bayt (a.s.).

The Holy Quran states,

ÙŠَا Ø£َÙŠُّÙ‡َا الَّØ°ِينَ آمَÙ†ُوا لاَ تَدْØ®ُÙ„ُوا بُÙŠُوتَ النَّبِÙŠِّ Ø¥ِلاَ Ø£َÙ† ÙŠُؤْØ°َÙ†َ Ù„َÙƒُÙ…

 “O those who believe! Do not enter the houses of the prophets without their permission”
(Surah Ahzab: 53)

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) said, “Surely the door of Fatemah is like my door and her house is my house. Then whoever is disrespectful towards her, it is as if he has crossed the veil of Allah.”

OPPRESSIONS UPON JANABE ZAHRA (S.A.)

Introduction

The Holy Quran has ordained love and affection for Ahle’ Bayt (a.s.) as the reward for the efforts and difficulties undertaken by the Holy Prophet of Islam (s.a.w.) for delivering the message of Islam.

On innumerable occasions, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) emphasized that Muslims treat the  Ahle’ Bayt (a.s.) with respect and courtesy. Not only did he (s.a.w.) hold them in high esteem and recommend their love to us, but he (s.a.w.) also prohibited us from causing them injury or harm in any manner.

The Holy Quran, through Ayate’ Tatheer gave witness to their complete and absolute purity. It is famous that every day after the revelation of this verse, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) stopped by the house of Janabe’ Zahra (s.a.) and, after conveying salaam, recited Ayate’ Tatheer.
